The current generation of young Americans does not see automobiles the same way the previous generation did; driving is not nearly as fundamental a part of twenty-something life as it used.  

Considering that more than 40% of an American's energy consumption comes from transportation alone, much of it from private automobile transportation, this fact holds significant consequence for future energy expenditures in the United States, and the world.
